Thirteen (Tiến Lên): The Fast Vietnamese Shedding Classic

Thirteen, known natively as Tiến Lên (meaning 'To Go Forward'), is Vietnam's national card game. Four players sit down with a standard 52-card deck. Each player gets 13 cards. It is an aggressive climbing game built on high-stakes cuts, sudden bomb chops, and strict suit power. The mission is direct: get rid of every card in your hand before your opponents do.

Cultural Roots and Global Spread

Tiến Lên took root across Vietnam in the mid-20th century. It became the centerpiece of Lunar New Year (Tết) gatherings and late-night porch games. Vietnamese immigrants brought the game to California, France, and Australia, where players often call it Thirteen or Killer. It remains one of the fastest shedding games ever designed.

Southern (Miền Nam) vs. Northern Rules

We run Southern rules (Tiến Lên Miền Nam). Northern rules force players to match suits during runs. Southern rules throw that out. You can build straights across mixed suits and use explosive bomb hands, like three consecutive pairs or four of a kind, to chop a mighty 2 out of turn.

Deal and Table Rotation

Shuffle all 52 cards and deal 13 to each of the four players. In game one, the player holding the 3 of Spades goes first and must include that card in their opening hand. In every round after that, the winner of the previous round leads the table with any valid combination they want.

Card Hierarchy, Suits, and Bomb Types

  • Card Hierarchy: 3 is the lowest card in the deck. Ranks climb: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. The 2 (the Pig or 'Heo') sits at the top as the highest card in the game.
  • Suit Precedence: When ranks tie, suits decide the winner. Spades are lowest, followed by Clubs, Diamonds, and Hearts at the top. The Ace of Hearts beats the Ace of Spades.
  • Standard Combinations: Singles, Pairs, Triples, and Straights (sequences of 3 or more consecutive ranks). Twos cannot sit inside straights.
  • Bombs and Chopping ('Chặt'): Four of a kind or three consecutive pairs act as Bombs. Play a bomb on any single 2 to chop it down out of turn. Four consecutive pairs can chop a pair of 2s or counter another player's bomb.
  • Passing Rules: If you cannot beat the current cards, or choose not to, you pass. Once you pass, you sit out for the rest of that trick until the table resets.

Object of the Game

Empty your 13-card hand first. First player out takes 1st place. The remaining players fight for 2nd and 3rd. Do not get caught holding 2s or bombs when someone goes out, because unplayed honors cost you heavy penalty points.

How to Play Thirteen (Tiến Lên)

Thirteen is an aggressive shedding game for four players. Each player starts with 13 cards. The leader plays a single, pair, triple, or straight. The next player must play the exact same combination type with a higher rank or higher suit. If you cannot or choose not to play, you pass. The trick ends when three players pass in a row. The last player to drop a card clears the board and leads the next trick.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  • 1. Check Your Hand: Sort your cards by rank. Identify potential straights, pairs, and bomb hands immediately.
  • 2. Lead Low Cards: If you lead, dump your lowest useless singles first (like a 3 of Spades or 4 of Clubs).
  • 3. Match Combinations: Beat singles with higher singles. Beat pairs with higher pairs. Beat straights with equal-length straights of higher value.
  • 4. Chop With Bombs: When someone drops a high 2, slam down four of a kind or three consecutive pairs to chop their 2 off the table.
  • 5. Pass Tactically: Save your big cards. If an opponent plays a high pair early, let them take it and preserve your power.
  • 6. Empty Your Hand: Drop your last card to claim 1st place.

Winning and Penalties

First player with an empty hand wins the round. Any player caught with unplayed 2s or unplayed bombs loses extra points. Red 2s carry double the penalty of black 2s.

Tactical Tips for High Win Rates

  • Dump Low Singles Fast: Isolated low cards are poison. Use cheap tricks early to throw away 3s, 4s, and 5s.
  • Protect Your Twos: Do not burn a 2 early unless you have the lead cards to back it up. Control the late game.
  • Count Twos and Aces: Track how many 2s and Aces hit the felt. When three 2s are gone, your last 2 gives you absolute board control.
  • Set Up the Bomb Trap: If you hold four of a kind, stay quiet. Let an opponent get arrogant with a high 2, then chop them instantly.
