Spades is an iconic American trick-taking card game played by two partnerships of two players. Invented in the 1930s, Spades is celebrated for its strategic depth, precision bidding, and the rule that Spades are ALWAYS the trump suit.

Rules and Bidding Overview

The Deal: A standard 52-card deck is dealt evenly so each player starts with 13 cards.

Bidding: Before playing, each player bids the number of tricks they expect to win. Partner bids are combined to create the team target.

Nil Bids: A player can bid 0 ("Nil") for a massive 100-point bonus if they win zero tricks, or a harsh 100-point penalty if they accidentally take one.

Playing Tricks: Players must follow the led suit if possible. Spades cut and win against any non-Spade card.

Key Tactics for Spades Success

Count High Cards: Aces and Kings in non-Spade suits are strong trick winners.

Avoid Bag Accumulation: Taking extra tricks beyond your bid awards "sandbags". Collecting 10 bags incurs a severe 100-point penalty!

Protect Your Partner: Help your partner achieve their bid by clearing opponent high cards.
